Americanah is disguised as a love story but actually addresses the hardships of being an immigrant, it follows the story of Ifemelu and Obinze, who met in Nigeria and fell in love but due to political issues in their country, decide to pursue their studies abroad.
They both go through different scenarios faced by immigrants, Ifemelu has difficulties finding where she fits in the American black culture which leads her to start a blog titled “Raceteenth or Various Observations About American Blacks (Those Formerly Known as Negroes) by a Non-American Black”; it becomes her outlet to express her feelings on the culture of America.
When Obinze is unable to find a job that matches his educational background in London due to his immigrant status, he tries to get married for papers but gets faced with deportation. Americanah takes you through the highs and the lows of their lives as immigrants and how they find their way back to one another despite all the obstacles they had.
